Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps and the spectral data of Schrödinger operators, Jussi Behrndt, TU Graz |
|
Abstract: In this talk we discuss how the spectral data of selfadjoint Schrödinger operators on bounded or unbounded domains can be described with an associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. In particular, a characterization of the isolated and embedded eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenspaces, as well as the continuous and absolutely continuous spectrum in terms of the limiting behaviour of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is obtained. The results are natural multidimensional analogs of classical facts from singular Sturm-Liouville theory and can also be viewed as mild uniqueness results in the context of the classical Calderon problem.

Brownian Motion on Manifolds and Gradient Estimates via the Bismut-Elworthy-Li Formula, Robert Baumgarth,TU Dresden |
|
We study derivatives of gradient estimates of the heat semigroup of stochastic differential equations driven by a Brownian motion in particular the Bismut-Elworthy-Li formula. The remarkable fact of this formula is that the righthand side is independent of the gradient of the function f, so it potentially opens ways of studying gradient estimates. We give a brief overview how to define Brownian motion on (smooth Riemannian) manifolds: the extrinsic approach as solution to the usual martingale problem using a Whitney embedding and the Eells-Elworthy-Malliavin approach using the projection from the orthonormal frame bundle. Consequently, we show the BEL and a generalisation for subordinated Brownian motion.

08.06.2016 | Low-rank tensor recovery, Zeljka Stojanac, RTWH Aachen
Abstract: It has been noticed that many real-world signals are sparse (few entries are different from zero) or compressible (approximately sparse) in a certain basis of frame. This has led to the theory of compressive sensing which enables the recovery of sparse vectors from a number of measurements smaller than the vector length via efficient algorithms. Low-rank tensor recovery received a lot of attention in the last years, especially due to applications in seismology, video compression, and machine learning. Additionally, it is a natural generalization of compressive sensing and low-rank matrix recovery to tensor scenario. In this talk we present two approaches to the problem of low-rank tensors recovery from a small number of linear measurements. In the first approach we consider a natural generalization of the matrix singular value decomposition to tensors, called canonical decomposition (CP-decomposition) and the corresponding notions of rank and norm. The CP-decomposition and therefore its norm are in general NP-hard to compute. To overcome this difficulty we suggest convex relaxations of the tensor unit-nuclear norm ball obtained via theta bodies. These convex relaxations provide us with new norms called theta norms. That is, each relaxation defines a unit-$\theta_k$ norm ball. The theta norms can be computed via semidefinite programming. Thus, we use one of them to recover low-rank tensors from incomplete information via norm-minimization and we present the corresponding numerical results. In the second approach, we consider other tensor decompositions (and the corresponding notions of rank), namely – Tucker decomposition, HT-decomposition, and TT-decomposition. These decompositions can be computed via sequential singular value decompositions of appropriately defined matricizations of a given tensor. We extend and analyze the iterative hard thresholding (IHT) algorithm already known for compressive sensing and low-rank matrix recovery to tensor scenario (tensor IHT or TIHT). We provide a partial convergence result for TIHT. That is, we provide a convergence guarantee under an additional assumption on the iterates. This analysis is based on the assumption that the linear operator satisfies the so-called tensor restricted isometry property. Finally, we provide numerical results to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. We give an equivalent characterization of the resolvent estimates in terms of a handy inequality. In the second part we discuss the damped wave equation on a 2D partially rectangular domain with a strongly trapped geodesic. I present known results and open questions for this case. The third part of the talk is devoted to a sketch of the proof of the aforementioned handy inequality. |

Abstract: Random Quantum Walks have enjoyed an increasing popularity in recent years due to the roles they play in quantum search algorithms and condensed matter physics. We will discuss the dynamics of random quantum walks on certain graphs. The analysis of which leads to a family of random non-unitary contraction operators. We will present several deterministic and almost sure results about the location and nature of the spectrum of such walks as a function of their parameters.

Abstract: Quasicrystals are examples on non-periodic structures with long-range orientational order. They are described by so-called regular model sets, i.e., projections of certain subsets of a lattice in higher dimensional space. We show that the celebrated diffraction formula for regular model sets is equivalent to the Poisson summation formula for the underlying lattice. |

Abstract: This work is a contribution to the study of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS). Such equations arise in many physical fields, including nonlinear optics and Bose- Einstein condensation. This work contains three connected themes. The first part constructs multi-soliton solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii, as an approximate superposition of traveling waves (solitons). This result is obtained by exploiting the integrability of the the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The second part clarifies the relations between the classical formulation and the so- called hydrodynamical formulation that only has a meaning when the solution does not vanish anyw- here in the spatial domain. Generalizations for the multidimensional equation are established too. The last part of this work concerns existence and uniqueness results for a family of quasi-linear partial differential equations that generalize the equation of the binormal curvature flow for a curve in the three-dimensional space. The latter equation is in connection to the focussing cubic NLS by Hasimoto transformation.

Uncertainty quantification, Virginie Ehrlacher, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, France |
|
10:30, Reichenheiner Straße 41, Raum 705 Abstract: In this talk, we will present a basic introduction to uncertainty quantification methods. The aim of uncertainty quantification is the following: given the solution of a PDE with stochastic coefficients, we would like to compute output quantities like statistical averages or failure probability knowing the law of input quantities. After the description of the well-known Karhunen-Loeve decomposition, which is the basic mathematical tool used in order to represent a square-integrable processes by means of a finite number of random variables, we will present the most classical stochastic and deterministic techniques used in uncertainty quantification in order to compute means, failure probabilities and probability distribution of output quantities, like Monte-Carlo, reliability methods, Neumann, perturbation, L2 projection, collocation and Galerkin methods. If there is enough time, a brief introduction to methods specifically designed to circumvent the curse of dimensionality will be presented. |

Periodic Schrödinger operators with local defects and spectral pollution, Virginie Ehrlacher, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, France |
|
15:30, Reichenheiner Straße 41, Raum 705 Abstract: This talk will deal with the numerical calculation of eigenvalues of perturbed periodic Schrödinger operators located in spectral gaps. Such operators are encountered in the modeling of the electronic structure of crystals with local defects, and of photonic crystals. The usual finite element Galerkin approximation is known to give rise to spectral pollution. We show that the corresponding spurious eigenvectors can be interpreted as surface states in a certain sense which will be precised. Besides, we extend results by Lewin and Séré on some no-pollution criteria and prove that spectral pollution can be avoided using augmented finite element bases using the so-called Wannier functions. Indeed, we prove that using approximate spectral projectors enables one to eliminate spectral pollution in a given spectral gap of the reference periodic Schrödinger operator. Lastly, we prove that the supercell method does not lead to spectral pollution and provide a priori estimates for this approximation method. It is proved in particular that the rate of convergence of the method is exponential with respect to the size of the supercell. |

13:30, Reichenheiner Straße 41, Raum 705 Abstract: The theory of the dynamics of measure preserving group actions on probability spaces is a key discipline in ergodic theory. During the last couple of years, significant breakthroughs have been made concerning the pointwise convergence theorems for actions on non-amenable groups. In particular, Lewis Bowen and Amos Nevo have developed a strong machinery to prove ergodic theorems for large classes of group. The goal of the talk is to give a brief description of the method in the case of the free group. We will point out how to find amenable equivalence relations on the boundary of the group which can be used to use classical tools for beautiful non-classical results. |

Abstract, The non-periodic Penrose tiling of the plane exhibits a strong regularity property called linear repetitivity. This regularity is reflected in strict ergodicity of an associated dynamical system arising from the tiling's translation orbit closure. We introduce relaxed versions of linear repetitivity for uniformly discrete point sets, which still lead to strictly ergodic dynamical systems. Examples are periodic point sets with almost periodic modulations, and primitive substitutions tilings finite local complexity with respect to the Euclidean group with dense tile orientations.
