HZwo:BIP - InnoTeam
Completed Research Project

The project focuses on the process and product development of an innovative bipolar plate suitable for large production runs for passenger car fuel cells. Bipolar plates are currently main cost drivers of fuel cells. A production-compatible design is to be converted into a safe and easy-to-produce component and tool geometry using methods of forming simulation and preliminary tests. Functionalized and cost-effective semi-finished products are also investigated with regard to their damage-free forming and joining properties. Furthermore quality-determining chemical, physical and mechanical factors will be evaluated, and methods for quality assurance and process monitoring will be developed for serial production. The results of the investigations lead to a prototype that can be produced cost-effectively in large quantities.

Aim:

  • Activation of the market for fuel cell vehicles by reducing production and material costs
  • Establishing a value chain for future power trains in Saxony
  • Skill development through interdisciplinary collaboration

Approach:

  • Development of functionalized semi-finished products
  • Prototyping of a cost-effective bipolar plate suitable for large production runs
  • Energy efficient production processes and plants
  • Scientific professional development of the core InnoTeam-members
