AIM OF THE SYMPOSIUM
The study of single quantum systems has become increasingly important during the last decade. The investigated systems range from single molecules in such diverse environments as liquids, bio-membranes, polymers, or solids to single semiconductor nano particles. Single molecule detection techniques can be expected to form a cornerstone for future nano-technologies. The intention of the symposium is to provide a forum for discussion and to encourage scientists from different disciplines to exchange their ideas to motivate new interdisciplinary co-operations. Such contacts might stimulate joint applications for financial support from the Volkswagen Foundation in the framework of the recently established new priority area "Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with Single Molecules".
