The University of Aveiro was founded in 1973. It is a young university with a strong focus on research and innovation. This is reflected in its collaborations with renowned regional companies and international organizations. The campus is well known for its architectural quality, with many buildings designed by top Portuguese architects. It is located on a large site between the salt mines of the Aveiro Delta and the city center.

The Political Science department was established in 2001, making it a relatively young field at the university. The University of Aveiro boasts a well-equipped library that offers both literature and numerous reading and study spaces.

Student life largely takes place on campus, which features a sports hall, an athletics track, a laundry service, a post office, a bank, various shops, and much more.

Aveiro is often called the "Venice of Portugal" due to its many canals. The city is an excellent starting point for boat trips to the surrounding areas. The central canal, where the brightly painted Moliceiro boats glide, separates the historic old town—once reserved for the nobility—from the modern district.

Some of Aveiro’s most notable landmarks include the tilework at the Estação (train station), the São Bartolomeu Chapel, and the city’s iconic Cathedral, known for its large Gothic cross. Aveiro combines the advantages of a big city with the charm of a historic small town.
