The Professorship for Education offers the emphasis Educational Research at the Institute of Education. Knowledge in empirical methods are an integral part of educational and cultural science. Empirical research offers important insight into the governance of education, the understanding of educational organizations, and the professionalization of educational practice. Students learn about basic procedures of social-scientific empiricism in the courses of the professorship so that they are able to reflect on research critically and apply scientific research methods.

Over the course of two lectures on the quantiative and qualitative methods of educational research, students learn about scientific theory, , research logic, and basic knowledge of statistical analysis and the interpretation of quantiative data. Furthermore, within the context of the seminars, students learn about different techniques for data analysis. These courses are accompanied by a lecture on the structures and functions of the educational system of Germany in comparison with international educational systems. In this lecture, current research results of these different educational systems are presented and discussed. This course is obligatory for BA Education students. Generally, the lectures are open to students from all disciplines.

BA Education students with an emphasis inMethods of Educational Research, Vocational Studies and Business Education or Intercultural Education have the possibility to apply their knowledge in study projects and to deepen their knowledge in the two seminars "Wissenschaftstheoretische Grundlagen" and "Aktuelle Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Bildungsforschung". Final papers can either be structered as small individual research projects, be part of a bigger research project of the professorships, or can also be based on secondary literature.

Two seminars are offerd in the MA Education and Learning Cultures study programme which focus on the theoretical comprehension of learning cultures and their empiric qualitative analysis. These courses are supplemented by courses from the Professorship forEmpirical Social Research which offer advanced lectures in the quantiative methods of social science. In addition, there is the possibility for Master and advanced Bachelor students to participate in a research workshop about biographical analysis and in research projects of the professorships.
