Gesture Studies at TU Chemnitz
When we speak, we not only use our voice but also our hands. Gestures, that is communicative movements of the hands and arms, are an integral part of speech and language and contribute to speaking in meaningful ways. Gestures specify, complement, or even replace speech. With gestures, speakers can visually depict spatial relations, objects, or actions. As such, gestures are a way to our visual and spatial conceptualizations.
Gesture research at the TU Chemnitz investigates the roles and functions of gestures in interaction and communication from a cognitive-linguistic and semiotic perspective. The main areas of research are
- Semiotic, semantic, and cognitive structures of gestures,
- (inter)relation of speech and gesture,
- integrating gestures in spoken concepts of semantics and grammar,
- development of a multimodal grammar of German.

11. April bis 01. September 2019 im Museum für Kommunikation Berlin
Die interaktive Ausstellung "Gesten – gestern, heute, übermorgen" macht Gesten und ihre vielfältigen Bezugspunkte zu aktuellen kulturellen sowie technischen Entwicklungen und Wandlungsprozessen erfahr- und erlebbar. In dem von der Technischen Universität Chemnitz gemeinsam mit dem Ars Electronica Futurelab (Linz) und dem Sächsischen Industriemuseum entwickelten Projekt treffen interaktive Installationen auf geschichtsträchtige Exponate sowie auf Kunstwerke, die sich mit Gesten auseinandersetzen.

Since 2012, students of German Studies, elementary school, Intercultural Communication, and Semiotics and Multimodal Communication are trained in the analysis of hand and body movements. As part of lectures, courses and applied courses, students get to know the theoretical and empirical basis for analyzing gestures. In the courses, research and teaching intersect: Results from ongoing research projects are included in the courses and thus lead to a close connection of research and teaching.
Topics include, among others, basics of multimodality and gesture studies from a cognitive-linguistic, semiotic, and interactive viewpoint, deixis, semantics/pragmatics/grammar, and gesture typology.
Research projects in the field of gesture studies cover a broad range of topics in the field of gesture studies, ranging from basics in the relation of speech and gesture, the description of semiotic, semantic, and cognitive aspects of gestures to the description of gesture repertoires in endangered languages. A new line of research, as part of the main research area „Human Factors in Technology” of the TU Chemnitz, addresses the field of human-machine interaction.

Public tours through the special exhibition “Gestures – past, present, future”
The exhibition “Gestures – past, present, future” showcases the dynamic world of gestures and its diverse references to current cultural and technical developments and processes of change. The project, a cooperation between the Technical University Chemnitz, the Ars Electronica Futurelab (Linz) and the Saxon Museum of Industry, brings together interactive installations and historical exhibits with art works taking gestures as their theme.

Talking with the hands
Public lecture series during the winter term 15/16 at the SMAC (Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz)
