Novel AMC composite powder for laser bed 3D printing processes

In a joint ERDF project funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank, the Chair of WOT is working with CMMC GmbH, the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools IWU, NRU GmbH and BENSELER Sachsen GmbH & Co. KG to develop and research the suitability of innovative aluminium matrix composite powders for 3D printing processes.

In the project, atomisation processes are used together with industrial and research partners to produce highly particle-reinforced AMC powders. These are then processed into near-net-shape components using the laser powder bed fusion process. The aim is to establish a systematic correlation between the starting material, atomisation process, LPBF parameters and performance properties of the manufactured components. Furthermore, comparisons are being made in the project with regard to economic efficiency and quality compared to casting processes.

At the end of the project, the basis should be created for producing high-quality products from AMC and establishing them on the market. The commercially active project partners hope to expand their product range by establishing new materials and products. The project thus makes an important contribution to technological innovation and resource efficiency in Saxony.

The grant is provided from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and from tax revenue on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
