Honorary doctorate for Dr Klaus Nassenstein
On 6 November 2024, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr Klaus Nassenstein at the suggestion of the IWW.
Dr Nassenstein is a managing partner of GTV Verschleißschutz GmbH, GTV Thermal Spray Beijing in China and GTV Automotive GmbH. In addition, he has held honorary positions and offices in research, standardisation and standardisation nationally and internationally for over 30 years, is a member of the board of the German Thermal Spraying Association (GTS) and was President of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF) until 12 April 2024. Over the past 25 years, he has been instrumental in developing research activities at GTV. These activities initially culminated in the research centre inaugurated in 2018, which has several laser coating cells and various facilities for analytics and diagnostics in addition to all the main thermal spray processes .
The award of an honorary doctorate to Klaus Nassenstein recognises these outstanding achievements and special services to science and technology - particularly in the field of innovative wear protection using thermal spraying and laser cladding - as well as his close collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology. This was underlined by the words of welcome from the Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr Gerd Strohmeier, as well as those of the honouree's companions and business partners: Dr Felix Tiggemann, Head of Surface Technology, Flowserve Control GmbH Ettlingen, Dr Roland Böcking, Managing Director of the German Welding Society (DVS), Professor Dr Thomas Schnick, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, and Werner Krömmer, Managing Director of the Thermal Spraying Association (GTS).
In his laudatory speech, Prof. Dr Thomas Lampke, Head of the WOT Chair at Chemnitz University of Technology, also highlighted the visionary ideas and intelligent solutions for designing surfaces with high wear and corrosion protection that distinguish Dr Nassenstein as an outstanding scientist, researcher and entrepreneur. The IWW of Chemnitz University of Technology was involved in some of GTV's developments, which emphasises the trusting cooperation between the institutions. This is to be continued and now expanded.
