Successfully completed habilitation
On 18 March 2024, Dr.-Ing. habil. Thomas Grund defended his habilitation thesis entitled „Materials engineering in sustainable production“. The examination for the associated successful completion of his habilitation procedure at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology consisted of a subsequent disputation and a teaching sample on the topic of direct metallisation of non-metals.
In his paper, Dr Thomas Grund uses identified strategies to address and discuss material technology measures for increasing sustainability in production. He discusses the boundaries of the material life cycle and the effect of material technology measures in the context of sustainable, resource-efficient production. On the basis of the principles developed, criteria are defined which visualise the effect of material technology measures on the sustainability of a product or process. From this, Dr Grund derives a formalised procedure that can be used to evaluate and compare specific measures within different observation areas. The work is aimed at people involved in pre-competitive materials technology research and development or people entrusted with product pre-development. It claims to demonstrate a procedure for this phase that enables a comprehensive sustainability assessment by utilising easily accessible parameters from a wide range of material, production and product technology criteria.

The habilitation candidate's mentor was Professor Thomas Lampke. The group of examiners also included Professor Marlen Gabriele Arnold (TU Chemnitz) and Professor Wolfgang Tillmann (TU Dortmund). Professors Alexander Hasse and Ralph Mayer acted as assessors. Professor Sophie Gröger led the proceedings.
