Materials Day 2024
After the great interest last year, the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IWW) once again organised the „Day of Materials“ on 4 June 2024 in sunny weather. With numerous activities and demonstrations, students interested in materials were invited on a varied journey into the world of materials by the institute's staff.
Highlights included the friction stir welding of chocolate, the independent electroplating of copper rings and the opportunity to take thermographic images with the LWW skeleton „Georg Bones“. In addition, the more than 130 participants were able to test their muscular strength against the light metal aluminium in a "Hau den Lukas" and "Tauzieh-Zugversuch" (tug-of-war) test and thus experience plastic deformation (up to and including destruction) live. Guided tours and laboratory visits to the scanning electron microscopes were offered for a look behind the scenes at the IWW, and possible student work on the „IWW Board“ was also advertised.
Thanks to the friendly support of the InnoMat IWW e.V. support association, students were able to chat to the professors and their teams over bratwurst, grilled cheese, popcorn and a cold drink. Many questions about the courses on offer, student work and career prospects at the institute were answered. The positive response once again shows the students' great interest in the topics relating to materials and their application. A continuation of the event is therefore naturally planned for next year.
We would like to thank everyone involved in organising, preparing, running and following up the Materials Day. We would also like to thank the Förderverein InnoMat IWW e.V. for its generous support and the many students for their interest in our institute.
