Man and machine as team players?!

The 44th Ulm Discussion – Forum for Surface Technology – of the German Society for Electroplating and Surface Technology e.V. (DGO) was dedicated to the complex of topics „Measuring, controlling and regulating“ on 24/25 May 2023. On the two days of the event, more than 80 participants dealt with the future of electroplating technology with regard to digitalisation, automation and the interaction between man and machine.

This focus was supplemented by contributions on the use of new inline and offline analytics. These topics are of great importance with regard to the future viability of electroplating and surface technology and the fulfilment of requirements for the supply and value chain as well as the introduction of new types of processes and products.

With her contribution „Man and machine as team players?! Opportunities and challenges of the integration of humans in cyber-physical systems using the example of surface technology“ Dr habil. Franziska Bocklisch, head of the HCPS department at the WOT professorship, presented the major future challenges of industrial production. These include increasing sustainability, resilience and flexibility as well as human-centred digitalisation. New assistance and automation concepts are required that simultaneously ensure a sustainable connection to the human operator for the development and optimisation of cyber-physical production systems. Because humans and technology will continue to work together in the future, for example in surface technology; perhaps even as team partners.

Dr Bocklisch's presentation met with great interest and will soon be available in WOMag 7-8/2023.
