Successfully completed doctorate
On 27 July 2023, Dr Michael Bussas successfully completed his doctorate at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology. The examinations comprised the viva voce examination and a lecture with a disputation. His dissertation thesis is entitled „Function-oriented production and finishing of thermally sprayed cylinder tracks using a white-box testing approach“.
Dr Bussas completed the thesis while working as Technical Project Manager at Gebr. Heller Maschinenfabrik GmbH and as Group Manager Development & Prototype Production at Nagel Maschinen- und Werkzeugfabrik GmbH. The dissertation was supervised by Professor Thomas Lampke.
The work deals with modern thermally sprayed and finished cylinder liners and their quality-assured execution. For their manufacture and finishing, measured variables in particular are of special importance, which can be consistently observed with transferable findings during production and operational testing. The application of recognised scientific principles without further discourse reveals uncertainties and, in part, contradictions that must be overcome. The aim of the work was therefore to resolve contradictions or close gaps in theoretical models with regard to known performance problems of these thermally sprayed and machined coating systems through a comprehensive system analysis. The research shows that performance testing should not be done as a stand-alone evaluation criterion of a stand-alone manufacturing system, but as an integrative part of the manufacturing quality control with feedback loop. A successfully implemented white-box testing should therefore include integral, consecutive measurements and evaluations as well as data recording and evaluation of all known processes.
The entire team of the professorship says: Congratulations!
