WOT receives poster award during the DGM Composites Expert Days

More than 70 participants from science and industry exchanged ideas during the DGM's online Composites Expert Days on 29 and 30 June 2021. During this event, WOT employee Sarah Hirsch received the „Best Oral-Poster Award“ from an expert jury.

In addition to half-hour lectures, the event also included a detailed oral presentation of posters that had been prepared both visually and in terms of content. From a total of 28 presentations, the best three contributions were awarded the „Best Oral-Poster Award“. The Chair of WOT was represented with a poster by Sarah Hirsch, Robert Pippig, Dr. Thomas Grund and Prof. Thomas Lampke on the topic „Influence of metal matrix powder size on toughness of a high reinforced aluminium matrix composite prepared by field assisted sintering technique”. Ms Hirsch presented the paper and convinced the expert jury.

In the article, process-related possibilities were investigated to improve the toughness of AMC materials with SiC as a reinforcing component. Based on practical applications, the reinforcement content was selected with a comparatively high 35% by volume of SiC. The AMC materials were produced by means of FAST sintering (field-assisted sintering). In the course of the production, different fractions of the aluminium powders used in the starting powder mixtures were used based on material-technical considerations, and the produced samples were tested for their toughness. The tests, which were planned, carried out and evaluated according to statistical aspects, showed a high dependence of the characteristic values on these starting fractions.

Further statements on the results can be requested from the authors and can also be found in the WTK publication on the same topic ( https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1757-899X/1147/1/012020 ).
