Dr. habil. Wolfgang Hansal gives graduation speech at the graduation ceremony of the TU Chemnitz

In June, around 350 students at Chemnitz University of Technology received their graduate certificates in person at St. Peter's Church in Chemnitz. Dr. habil. Wolfgang Hansal, who completed his habilitation at the WOT professorship in December 2018, gives an emotional graduation speech.

On 22 June 2019, around 350 graduates of Chemnitz University of Technology were given a personal send-off into a new phase of their lives. A total of around 1,400 students and doctoral candidates graduate from TUC each year, of which a good 400 are from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Among them are always about 50 graduates in the narrow subject area of materials and surface engineering. The Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, personally congratulated the graduates present and handed out the graduate certificates. A total of around 1,200 guests attended the event. Due to the great popularity and demand for a central graduation ceremony, the format is even held twice a year. In addition to speeches by the rector and representatives of the city, the programme of the ceremony also included musical interludes by the Collegium Musicum of Chemnitz TU or a humorous speech by poetry slammer Erik Leichter.

However, some emotions were aroused by the closing speech of Dr Wolfgang Hansal, Managing Director of the Austrian company Hirtenberger Engineered Surfaces GmbH. Hansal habilitated in December 2018 at the TU Chemnitz in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. His supervisor was Prof. Dr. habil. Thomas Lampke, holder of the Chair of Materials Science and Engineering WOT. Hansal looked back on his time at the university with gratitude. He praised the intensive contact with Prof. Lampke that was made possible, but also with Professors Wielage and Steinhäuser, who are already emeritus. „There is achievement without success, but there is no success without achievement“, Hansal said with a view to his vita, but also took his hat off to the achievements of the other graduates and his supervising institution. He had great respect for the achievements at the WOT Chair and the entire Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology. „Great things have been created here in recent years, and the balancing act between basic research and work on industry-related topics“, said Hansal. He will therefore continue to stay in close contact with his university– especially with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the WOT–.
