Internationalisation and modern teaching concepts in electroplating and surface technology
In addition to the course „Surface Engineering/Coating Technology“ which has grown over many years, the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering has also been offering the English-language lecture series „Surface and Interface Engineering“ since 2016. The number of participants increases significantly from year to year, so that in the summer semester 2018, more than 90 interested students from all over the world were already welcomed.
In lectures and seminars, the basics of the most important surface coating and treatment processes are taught and the practical relevance is demonstrated. The lecturers increasingly use modern interactive feedback systems (so-called clickers), with which both the students and the lecturers can immediately check whether the subject matter has been understood.
The course is supplemented by demonstrative practical courses in which students can gain practical experience with selected electroplating and surface technology processes in smaller groups in the institute's own laboratory. A noticeable improvement in the grade average, the very good evaluation results of the courses and the resulting strong demand for topics for student work are a clear indicator of the success of this teaching concept. We would like to draw the attention of interested readers to an article in the next issue of the ZVO report in which the topic of „Academic Teaching at the Professorship WOT“ is explored in greater depth.
