On 27.03.2018, Dr Ruben Winkler defended his dissertation thesis entitled „Adhesion mechanisms of metals (Cu, Al) applied by wire arc spraying on polymer surfaces (PEEK)“.
Using high-resolution analytical methods, Dr Winkler systematically developed indications for both physical and chemical bonding components between arc-sprayed copper-based layers and thermoplastic substrate materials. These can be maximised by optimal process control and thus make a significant contribution to the adhesion of thermally sprayed metal layers to plastics, as they complement the mechanical interlocking typical of thermally sprayed layers. Thus, the adhesive tensile strengths of the coatings exceeded the material strengths of the thermoplastic base materials in some cases.
