Call from Chemnitz to the world: Special issue on plasma electrolytic oxidation is open for submissions


Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a process for producing oxide coatings on metallic materials in aqueous solutions under the influence of spark discharges. The basic principles of the process were developed in the 1980s at the former TH Karl-Marx-Stadt. Since then, PEO has been used in a variety of ways, particularly as a surface treatment of light metals for demanding applications in process engineering, medical technology and aerospace engineering. Current scientific articles point to the feasibility of using the process to develop new material groups and property profiles. This results in enormous potential for opening up new technical areas of application.

Therefore, the planned special issue aims at the fundamental understanding of the layer formation mechanisms in new base material-electrolyte systems as well as the production of microstructure-property relationships of the resulting novel PEO layers. The contributions may cover the following main topics, among others:

  • new methods and approaches for process diagnostics and material science analyses of PEO coatings,
  • Electrolyte and process development for the PEO of previously unexploited base materials, the substitution of hazardous chemicals and/or the saving of energy,
  • functional properties of novel PEO coatings, such as mechanical, chemical, optical, electrical or bioactive properties, and the extension of functionality through post-treatment.
