Objectives / Contents

Building on the knowledge gained in the courses "Forming Technology" and "Forming Tools", in-depth knowledge of forming technology in automotive engineering is imparted. Current and future-oriented research and development trends for structural and add-on body parts as well as for powertrain components are discussed. The lecture initially focuses on basic principles, such as special features in automotive manufacturing, selected materials and process planning. In addition, forming technologies for the production of body parts and powertrain components will be discussed and topics such as process reliability during forming and cutting, relevant joining processes, specific aspects in the design and quality assurance of outer skin parts or lightweight construction strategies for powertrain components will be dealt with.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the students are able:

  • To describe efficiency technologies for the production of structural and add-on parts of a car body,
  • To show solutions for increasing flexibility in the forming process,
  • To select adequate planning tools for process chains in car body part production as well as for the manufacture of drive components,
  • To mention types of lightweight construction in vehicle construction and to explain lightweight construction strategies for powertrain components,
  • To explain measures for achieving process reliability and features for characterizing component quality in automotive engineering,
