Abstract:
Our perceptions of other humans, both at a distance and for proximal interactions, are affected by many non-verbal behaviors including proxemics (use of space) and kinesics. These behaviors are well understood as conveying attention, emotion, and intent. For example, non-verbal cues such as eye contact, body proximity, forward leaning, smiling, and touch can convey intimacy and trust; while averted gaze, distance, and the absence of smiling and touch can indicate detachment.
While these non-verbal behaviors can be conveyed in video or conventional 2D virtual humans the conveyance is purely visual, and contained "within the display" being used to show the "human." In this talk I will introduce the idea of Physical-Virtual Humans - human surrogates that combine work in robotics/animatronics and computer graphics to achieve virtual humans with physical manifestations that can "break free" from conventional 2D displays, moving about a room and gesturing to get attention or emphasize a point. I will introduce the idea, along with some historically related work, new challenges, and potential concerns. I will then discuss challenges and opportunities related to potential applications including training and "teleportation."
