The scanned 3D surface represented by an unorganized point cloud is typically noisy, contains holes, has inconsistently oriented normals, and has high variations in point density. This report will introduce two methods. The first one is to assign consistently oriented normal vectors to the scattered points by constructing a guarding mesh. The second one is to consolidate unorganized points by interlaced downsampling and upsampling.
Radial Basis Function (RBF) is a important implicit fitting method and has been used in surface reconstruction methods to interpolate or approximate scattered data points. Its fitting procedure involves solving a large linear system. The linear systems for determining coefficients of RBF may be ill-conditioned when processing a large point set, which leads to unstable numerical results. This report will introduce a quasi-interpolation framework based on compactly supported RBF to solve this problem.
