Mensch und Computer 2011: überMEDIEN|ÜBERmorgen

(Human and Computer 2011: aboutMEDIA|ABOUTtomorrow)

The conference was organized by the Chair Media Informatics on behalf of the special interest group Human Computer Interaction of the German computer science society Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V. (GI) an the German Usability Professionals Association UPA. More than 580 participants could chose from more than 200 presentations. Keynote speaker were Aaron Marcus and Rolf Molich.

Topic: Media increasingly define our lives. Their growing diversity produces chances and risks. At the same time their use is becoming increasingly complex. Key topics of the conference are media themselves and their opportunities, risks, uses, influence on our lives and our influence on them, today and tomorrow. Conference languages are English and German.

The conference series Mensch & Computer (Human and Computer) was initiated in 2001 by the German Gesellschaft für Informatik (Society of Computer Science) as the leading event in the area of human-computer interaction in German speaking countries. The conference provides a platform for presentations and discussions on innovations in human-computer interaction, user-oriented design methods, interactive applications and related topics. The aim of the conference is to discuss innovative research results and to promote the exchange between researchers and practitioners.

The German UPA Track provides a forum for presentations and discussions of usability in practice. It is the largest meeting of usability professionals in German speaking countries. It focuses explicitly on everyday work experience and creates a unique opportunity for discussion and exchange.

The Entertainment Interface Track has been established at the Mensch und Computer last year. The track will be continued and researchers, developers and designers will be allowed to present and discuss innovations especially in interacting with computer games and other entertainment applications.

Workshop Audiovisuelle Medien WAM 2010: Digitale Mediendistribution

(Workshop Audiovisual Media WAM 2010: Digital Media Distribution)

The second workshop on audiovisual media took part in Chemnitz at the 1st and 2nd June of 2010. It was organized by the research group sachsMediA and the Chair Media Informatics. About 50 participants discussed 12 presentations, 4 demonstrations and two invited talks.

Thema: The distribution of audiovisual media is changing. The power of the Internet with its on-demand services provides an alternative to classical broadcasting. Here again, the digitization first in the TV area and now also on the radio has enabled broadcasting to become more interactive. Interactive, localized and personalized services are now also available on the home TV. The strict separation of the Internet and television will be abandoned in favor of convergent services. The application scenarios on computer, television and mobile devices produce an impressive variety that offers both in the technical design as well as in the content creation challenges and opportunities.

The workshop attempted here to outline problems and possible solutions and it dealt with the technological issues surrounding the distribution of audiovisual media.

Workshop Audiovisuelle Medien WAM 2009: Archivierung

(Workshop Audiovisual Media WAM 2009: Archiving)

The second workshop on audiovisual media took part in Chemnitz at the 4th and 5th June of 2009. It was organized by the research group sachsMediA and the Chair Media Informatics. About 50 participants discussed 20 presentations.

Topic:Audiovisual media are increasingly becoming a challenge for traditional archives. A fast-growing (Web-) TV market with broadcast material or raw material, the increasing use of educational multimedia material in schools, colleges and companies, the spread of video analysis as a research and teaching method, teacher training in adult education, the spread of surveillance cameras and the increasingly low cost production conditions for producers only provide a slight hint about the new quantitative dimensions. Current archival and documentary tools are not ready for this situation.

The workshop attempts to outline problems and possible solutions and it deals with the technological issues surrounding the archiving of audiovisual media. It addresses the technological problems as well as the design of the user interfaces.
