Gender – Facts and figures

In accordance with the yearly statistical survey directed from the German Research Foundation's Excellence Initiative, all MERGE-personnel have been asked to fill out an employee questionnaire form in the summer of 2013. The data acquired by issuing such surveys offers an extensive informational basis to the staff-composition within the Cluster of Excellence MERGE.

Since the project's initiation, the number of academic co-workers has increased to a total of 83. Alongside this number, a total of 121 academics and professors are currently working as researchers for the interdisciplinary project. With a female ratio of 32 percent amongst the academic workers, MERGE currently lays well above average in comparison with the other MINT-Faculties within Saxony and Germany.

In order to reinforce this positive development, the Cluster of Excellence MERGE will continue to carry out additional measures in the near-future to support the compatibility of family and career, as well as provide the necessary career advancement opportunities to the next generation of female academics in conformance with DFG directives. Under this initiative, the creation of appropriate parent-child workroom facilities, the organization of flexible child-care services and the provision of back-up-plans during cluster of excellence sessional gatherings have been planned. Career advancement opportunities from the MERGE- academic women are provided in the form of a wide variety of soft-skill seminars, individualized continuing education programs and many coaching and mentoring opportunities.

Mentoring at TU Chemnitz

What is Mentoring at TU Chemnitz?

The Mentoring Chemnitz project emerged out of the earlier Saxon Mentoring Network System (MENTOSA) as an independent project within TU Chemnitz. Mentoring Chemnitz is currently financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and has been successfully operating for the past 5 years. The program's primary goal is to support undergraduate and post-graduate students in successfully entering the job market in Saxony.

What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a form of support for individuals who are inexperienced in the business world (Mentees) with the aid of experienced professionals (Mentors), whose main concern is not only the exchange of academic and professional knowledge pertaining to the world of business, but also the exchange of personal experience.

The idea of mentoring should not be understood as superficial starting-aid and/or job-provision, rather it is about perspective, encouragement, and the recognition of one's personal opportunities. This way, the professional, social, and personal development of the participants remains the primary focus.

  • The scheduled accompaniment of the mentor's everyday business-life, so as to familiarise oneself with the professional world of business
  • The provision of contact partners
  • An introduction into networking
  • Insight into one's own behavioral patterns
  • Individualised career planning
  • An introduction into informal knowledge pertaining to a variety of organizations and/or career fields
  • The joint-development of professional career strategies
  • Assistance in work related tasks
(Cf. Kathrin Van Riesen 2006: 102)
  • Contact with business-experienced professionals from your target career
  • Insight into networks and the development of personal contacts
  • Help with career orientation and entry into the business world
  • Access to individual, hands-on counseling in a gender-sensitive environment
  • The development of strategies and goals for one's personal career
  • The acquisition of necessary qualifications and key-skills
  • The discovery of one's own potential and areas of development
  • The strengthening of gender-sensitive management and leadership skills

MERGE participation in the project "Mentoring at the TU Chemnitz"

The Cluster of Excellence MERGE is eager to utilise the mentoring programme at TU Chemnitz in the future to aid individual post-graduate students who are striving for a career in academia. All female students studying at the TU Chemnitz who currently hold an interest in working with MERGE are encouraged to apply for a Mentee-position.

Events

Women in Science & Engineering
