WUSCH - Windows Update Service in the campus net at Chemnitz University of Technology

deutsche Version
WUSCH is acronym for Windows Update Service at CHemnitz University of Technology.

Basis und target

This service is an offer of the computing center (URZ) to improve the security on Windows-based PCs used in the campus net. The basis is the opportunity, integrated in new Windows platforms, to update an installation automatically by Windows-Update. Normally this updates will be downloaded from Microsoft servers.

WUSCH is about to offer this service in the campus net by the Chemnitz University of Technology. A decrease of extern traffic and a possible local administration of such Updates are the advantages (see Scope of service). Now it is possible to update computers without direct access to the internet.

Service Level Agreement (SLA)

The SLA manges the scale and conditions for WUSCH: the appropriable services offered by URZ and the user's responsibility of this service.

Scope of service

The URZ is running servers saving security patches, provided by their manufacturer, to distribute them autmatically. The synchronisation to Microsoft is done normally once per day.

On WUSCH servers security updates, update rollups, updates and important updates for german and english Windows and Office 2003 installations are provided.

The approvement of those patches is done by URZ after a simple review. This includes a classification and, if possible, a successful test installation without any negative results or effects.

Due to heterogeneity on target systems responsibility for correctness of this patches is declined. This also includes compatibility to the running system.

Service packs for the operating system because of their complexity aren't provided for automatic installation. Those can be downloaded for manual installation from Security recommendation for Windows-PSs/Service Packs (german).

Following Windows plattforms are supported:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows 2000
Attention: Patches are provided by their manufacturer only for the current Service Pack. With the release of a new Service Pack the older one will be supported for 12 months. For detailed information from the manufacturer see

Operation and maintenance times

WUSCH is provided 7 x 24h.

For necessary maintenance time between 6:00 and 6:30 is reserved, but is only used if demanded. The automatic update of the servers, which depends on release of patches, is also done in this period of time.

Communication

There is no registration required to use WUSCH. To distribute informations relevant to WUSCH the mailinglist windowsupdate@tu-chemnitz.de is offered. Subscription is recommended to WUSCH users: subscription form for mailinglist Windows Update Service.

Storage of user data
