New Vendor Coming to the Mensa

A new grocery store operator has been found for the Mensa building on the Reichenhainer Straße campus

The Edeka grocery store on the Chemnitz University of Technology Reichenhainer Straße campus will close at the end of September, but a gap in operations will not occur. This was announced in a press release from Studententwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau (SWCZ) on 10 September 2019.

Oliver Kettler will take over operations of the grocery store in the Mensa building as of Wintersemester 2019/2020. Kettler and his wife have been successfully operating a copy shop and a post office on Reichenhainer Straße for nearly 25 years.

With the retooling of the grocery store, students and employees of the university will continue to be able to take advantage of the store’s convenient location and hours. As SWCZ manager Anja Schönherr explained, however, the building space will initially need to be remodeled. The cafeteria seating area will be extended right up to the window in front of Reichenhainer Straße and the travel agency next door will be getting a new location within the current grocery store space. The remodel should be completed by summer 2020. During the construction period, the grocery area will be temporarily located on the premises of the former Bar Ausgleich in the upper floor of the cafeteria. Thus, there will be no gap in service for students and staff.
