Study for one semester in Britain, an internship in Spain or rather in Sweden? According to the European Commission in the academic year 2011/2012 more than 250,000 students have spent a semester abroad or completed an internship at a company thanks to the Erasmus program. This number is expected to increase by the new generation of program Erasmus+ and its combined advantages.

In order to expand the opportunities for young people to study or to work in another European country, the Erasmus program has been extended by some components. "The students are offered by Erasmus+ now even more manifold funding opportunities for studying abroad during their studies. It is now possible to be funded by the Erasmus program for twelve months for each study phase, this includes the Bachelor and Master as well as the promotion period," says Oliver Sachs, Erasmus coordinator at the International Office (IUZ) of TU Chemnitz. Who ever prefers to split his mobility contingent of twelve months in study and internship can do so. For example in addition to a minimum of three months of study abroad an internship of at least two months can be added in the same study phase. Even for students who have already participated in the Bachelor at the previous Erasmus program, a Master degree mobility contingent of twelve months is again available.

Another new feature is the grading of the scholarships grants. The amount of funding is now depending on the cost of living in each country, separated into three groups. "We can probably pay at least 30 percent more to the students than the so far applied monthly installments. Another very pleasant news is the new opportunity to get a sponsored internship between Bachelor and Master," says Sachs. Students who are interested in such an internship should apply in their last bachelor semester and then get in touch with the Leonardo Office, which is the cooperation partner of TU Chemnitz for Erasmus fundings. The staff can give lots of advice for an application and provide contact information about possible internship facilities available abroad. This includes also a regular internship during the studies. "With the new Erasmus program we are taking another big step in the right direction. A standard European educational area, where academic degrees are transnational accepted and the mobility of young people is encouraged is very important for the community within Europe," says Sachs.

Students, who are interested in staying abroad with Erasmus+, should contact the International Office. At the moment the application period for the winter semester 2014/2015 and the summer semester 2015 is running.
