The course is designed primarily for students, doctoral candidates and researchers who are currently writing or soon intend to write academic papers (dissertations/theses and research papers for publication) in English. The course is equivalent to Level C1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages and the UNIcert course Z3M3, yet is open to students who are not following the UNIcert language programme offered by the university. Participants should already have an advanced standard of general English before starting the course. This will be checked by review of a writing sample before the course begins. A short assignment will be provided to candidates upon registration.
The course itself will cover an analysis of the academic and related genres, cultural conventions and standards in writing styles, citation and publication in the Anglo-American scientific communities along with guidance in writing one?s own academic paper. This will include input on sentence, paragraph and essay structure as well as class and individual feedback on participants? own writing assignments. Materials will be provided online by means of our learning platform BABEL.
A grade for the course and two ECTS points may be obtained by submitting a short academic paper (approx. 2000 words) at the end of the course.
