Thema:	A criterion for crack initiation at a v-notch
Energy and strength criteria are necessary conditions for fracture, but neither one nor the other are sufficient. The energy criterion provides a lower bound for admissible crack lengths while the stress criterion provides an upper bound. The consistency between these two bounds leads to a general form for a crack nucleation criterion. There is a fair agreement between this theoretical prediction and experiments on v-notched specimens of PMMA and Alumina.
