The laboratory in brief

With a base area of 54 m² the focus group room offers room for up to 20 people. It is equipped with conference tables and chairs. For visual support the room further contains a beamer and a projection screen as well as white boards.

What is a 'focus group'?

The term 'focus group' stands for a group dicussion with about six participants about a theme pertaining to usability. In a moderated conversation, experts and users concertedly talk about requirements, desires or problems concerning a certain product. This way, important indications to the users' needs can be obtained. A group discussion thereby often provides more information than individual interviews, as the participants can inspire or contradict each other. Another advantage is the high flexibility. A focus group can be applied at any time and does not require any measuring methods or theoretical model.

When is it useful to deploy a focus group?

A focus group is a qualitative research method by means of which subjective impressions can be identified. Often it is applied prior to quantitative studies. As a product idea is already sufficient for the deployment of a focus group, it can reasonably be applied in the area of research. This way, driver assistant systems can be optimized already in the stage of their development.

What is being researched within the focus group room?

By means of a focus group, subjective impressions, emotions or motives of the participants can be identified. Furthermore, a method like this gives information about the users' vocabulary, which can then be used for instance in designing a manual.
