Formation of localized structures from a chaotic background |

There are numerous spatiotemporal dynamical systems where regular high-amplitude structures appear from a disordered background. Examples for this behavior are as diverse as optical self-focusing in nonlinear media and the formation of freak waves in the ocean. Are there any similarities of this behavior in such dissimilar systems? This talk investigates this question using methods from statistical mechanics.
