Listserver for communication between Tecnai users

Dear colleagues,

following our discussion in Dresden during the FEG user meeting, I have now a listserver installed which is intended to facilitate the communication between Tecnai users. Although this somewhat seems to imply that non-Tecnai users are not welcome, this is definitely not the case. Whoever wants to contribute to the discussions going on in this circle is very welcome, even if the address of the listserver is

TECNAI@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de

Any mail you send to this address will be stored in the listserver and distributed to all members of list 'technai' simultaneously.

For registration of new members, for notice of departure and for other personal settings the listserver is capable of performing a number of automatic operations  in response to messages sent to it (that is to maiser@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de ) without a subject, but with simple commands in the main message body (try to turn off any automatic signatures, as this might cause problems). Using the help command we received a list of all commands that you can use. In special, for those who join the club later, they will find a possibility to retrieve the former eMails from the server to know the history of certain discussions which may be currently going on.

The intention of this listserver was and is to provide a forum for user discussions about certain aspects of the microscope (handling, service, script programming, available software etc.). As it turns out, quite often somebody solved a certain (or similar) problem already, and one can at least learn a lot from this solution. In case you find a bug, you are advised not only to let this community know about it, but also and in first place to use the bug report form on

http://www.feic.com/tecnai/release.htm

in order to make the problem known to FEI. Do not take it as given that a report made here makes it automatically to FEI.

In this listserver, I included all eMail addresses which I got during the Dresden meeting plus some of my own working group. Please feel free to tell every interested user about this listserver, who then has to send an email to maiser@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de  with the main text body of "subscribe tecnai@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de" (without the quotation marks). To start with, I wrote this in English to facilitate communications with future participants who do not speak German. Please, feel free to use German if you like so, instead.

I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2001 full of success with and around the electron microscopes.

Yours sincerely

       |                Mail Server Help.               |

The Mercury Mail Transport  includes a simple mail server capable of performing  a number of automatic  operations  in response  to messages sent to it.  Some or all operations may be restricted at some sites.

To activate  the mail server,  send a message to the special mail server account at the site, here

         MAISER@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de
     or
         MAISER@uranus.ngate.uni-regensburg.de

with the subject of the message set to anything  (the mail server will quote your subject  line back to you in its reply),  and the commands  the mail server should  perform  listed one per line in the message body.  The mail server stops parsing commands when it encounters  the  end of the message,  or a blank  line.   If your mailer adds a signature  to your messages,  make sure you enter a blank  line after the last command. Unrecognized  commands  are ignored and generate no error.

The following commands are recognized  by the mail server at this site;

     HELP

  • Takes no parameters, returns this text.

    VERIFY <address>

  • Determines whether a particular address is valid at this site.

    LOOKUP <string>

  • Returns a list of users at this address who match the string you supply. The string may contain * and ? wildcard characters. This command may be disabled at some sites.

    FINGER <address>

  • Returns information about a user at this address. The information returned may contain the user's FULL NAME, whether or not mail is enabled or forwarded, and whether mail reading will be confirmed. Also the content of the file PROFILE in the user's mail directory will be returned. This command may be disabled at some sites.

    BOUNCE

  • Takes no parameters - returns your message to you, headers intact.

    LIST

  • Shows all the mailing lists available at this site.

    SUBSCRIBE <list-name>
    or SUB <list-name>

  • Asks Maiser to add you to a mailing list. If the list is not a public list, you will receive an error message.

    UNSUBSCRIBE <list-name>
    or SIGNOFF <list-name>
    or UNSUB <list-name>

  • Asks Maiser to remove your address from a mailing list.

    SET <list> [NO]MAIL

  • Allows a user subscribed to a mailing list to disable and enable delivery of mail without unsubscribing. For example, if a user goes on holiday, he/she may wish to send a NOMAIL command to disable mail delivery while he or she is away.
         Examples:
SET test-l NOMAIL  - stop receiving mail from list "test-l"
SET test-l MAIL    - restart delivery from list "test-l"

    MSET <username> <list> <option>

  • Allows a list moderator to change the subscription options for a list subscriber. "username" is the subscriber's address, "list" is the name of the list, and "option" can be MAIL, NOMAIL, DIGEST or NODIGEST.
         Examples:
         MSET Joe.Bloggs@acronym.org test-l NOMAIL
         MSET Mary_Doe@snafu.com DIGEST

    ADD <list-name> <address>

  • If you are a moderator for the list, this command will add an address to the list.

    REMOVE <list-name> <address>

  • If you are a moderator for the list, this command will remove an address from the list.

    ENUMERATE <list-name>
    or REVIEW <list-name>

  • Asks the maiser to send you the current subscribers to the list. Enumeration of the list may be restricted on a list-by-list basis unless you are a list moderator.

    INDEX

  • Asks the maiser for a list of files available by e-mail at this site.

    SEND <filename>

  • Asks the mail server to send you a file. For a list of the files available by e-mail from this site, see the INDEX command.

    FINGER <address>

  • Returns mail-specific information about the specified address if it is local. Also returns the contents of the file PROFILE if it exists in the user's new mail directory. The FINGER command is intended to allow distribution of information such as PGP keys and contact information.

    EXIT

  • Terminates mail server command processing for a message.

If you have problems  with  this facility,  or questions,  please mail them to "postmaster@listserv.ngate.uni-regensburg.de".
