Yearbook Extremism & Democracy
Each issue is divided into three sections. In the “Analyses” section, experts provide original, academic studies on a wide range of topics including the voters of extremist parties, anti-Americanism, political-religious approaches, Italian neo-fascism, totalitarianism and types of democracy. From time to time a “Forum” on a topic (e.g. Scientology, Islamist extremism) is included. The “Data, Documents, Dossiers” section always includes entries on the German national and sub-national elections, on extremist organisations, and on their documentation. In addition, detailed descriptions of relevant organisations (e.g. NPD) and topics (e.g. risk potential of violent Islamists) are presented, together with biographical studies of extremist leaders (e.g. Holger Apfel, Andreas Baader), country studies (e.g. Slovakia, Russia) and analyses of extremist journals (e.g. Criticón, Deutsche Stimme). Finally, the “Literature” section includes a few review articles, some twenty book reviews, and several hundred book notes on German and international literature on all aspects of political extremism and democracy. |
Since 1989 the German extremism researchers, Uwe Backes and Eckhard Jesse, have been publishing the German language “Yearbook Extremism & Democracy” (originally with Bouvier Verlag, and since 1995 at Nomos Verlag). The main focus is political extremism in the Federal Republic of Germany, both of the left and right, religious and secular. Since volume 21 Alexander Gallus has been an editor of the yearbook.Editors:
Uwe Backes
Born 1960 in Greimerath. Master in Political Science, History, Germanstudies, University of Treves. 1987 PhD in Political Science, University of Treves. 1997 Habilitation in Political Science, University of Bayreuth. Since 1999 Deputy Director of the Hannah Arendt Institute for the Research on Totalitarianism at the Technical University of Dresden.
Alexander Gallus
Born 1972. 1994 Master in Modern History, University of Oxford. 1998 PhD in Political Science, Chemnitz University of Technology. Since 2006 Assistent Professor in the Department Modern History at University of Rostock. 2011 Postdoctoral lecture qualification in Political Science and contemporary history, Chemnitz University of Technology.
Eckhard Jesse
Born 1948 in Wurzen/Leipzig. 1976 Diploma in Political Science and History, Freie Universität Berlin. 1982 PhD in Political Science, University of Treves. 1989/90 Habilitation in Political Science, University of Treves. Since 1993 Chair of the Department of Political Systems, Political Institutions, Chemnitz University of Technology.
