Department of Political Systems, Political Institutions

Academic Program

Overview

The primary mission of the department is to provide students with the knowledge of political institutions and government processes, both in Germany and in Europe. The main focus is the comparative analysis of the constitutional framework of democracies and dictatorships. Students examine the theory and practice of administration and policies, as well as the historical background and today’s context of political systems. In particular, courses on political leadership, on transformation of political systems, on the separation of powers, on political culture, on political parties and party systems, on elections and voting systems, on interaction of parliament and administration, and not the least on political extremism and totalitarianism allow students to think and learn independently, as well as to apply knowledge. The department offers a variety of courses for a BA, MA, and PhD degree.
