The Programme is a two-year interdisciplinary and modularized scientific education designed to enhance the analytical research skills and to improve practice-oriented communication competences of students preparing for both professional and academic careers which involve significant intercultural contacts with people who originate from various ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
Advanced studies in this subject are not only necessary to understand but also to cope with cross-cultural interactions in different professional contexts nowadays. Intercultural competence is steadily gaining importance in modern societies which are increasingly marked by economic globalisation, pluralism, and multiculturalism. The study programme addresses, therefore, global issues and problems by exploring them in a comparative framework from a multidisciplinary point of view, thus providing a specific learning environment for studying such issues and problems that cut across national boundaries. The programme focuses on the one hand on the theoretical background and on the other hand on practical fields such as evaluation of intercultural training programmes, mediation, and consulting. Students will be equipped with theoretical, methodological, and methodical skills in both “research intern-ships” seminars and compulsory excursions. Learning how to successfully conduct empirical research helps a student to acquire a deeper understanding of the complexity of cultural phe-nomena and the variety of cultural life forms in contemporary societies.
The programme is coordinated by the Department of Intercultural Communication at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Master’s Degree programme is designed for both international and German students. An academic requirement for joining the programme is an applicable Bachelor’s Degree, or its equivalent, in fields such as humanities, cultural studies, communication studies, social sciences, and linguistics. The teaching language is German and we seek to integrate students’ international experiences in our curriculum at all stages of the programme.
