The Chair of European History of the 19th and 20th century is part of the Institute of European History at the Department of Humanities at Chemnitz University of Technology. In addition to courses within the framework of the B.A. / M.A. degree program “European History”, the chair also contributes to the B.A. / M.A. programs “European Studies and “European Integration” at the Institute for European Studies and the B.A. program “Political Science” at the Institute of Political Science.

Teaching is focused on the main lines of development of European history in the "long" 19th and "short" 20th century. The main methodological approaches are the history of ideas and the history of relations. Other approaches are regional, cultural and military history and the history of sports. The chair offers introductory courses on the history of the whole continent as well as courses on certain sub-regions of Europe (Western E., Central E., Eastern E., Northern E., Southern E., South-eastern E.) and its national states from a comparative perspective. Our respective research activities are furthermore based on an interdisciplinary approach with close connections to the Political Sciences and Literary Studies.
