Information on Chemnitz and the region
Chemnitz, formerly one of the most important industrial cities of Germany, is located in the Western part of Saxony and it is the third biggest city in the free state following Dresden and Leipzig. The city, which is currently undergoing great changes, is part of the “Metropolitan Region Saxon Triangle” and of the “Economic Region Chemnitz-Zwickau”.
Chemnitz is framed by the foothills of the Ore Mountains which form the natural border between Saxony and Bohemia. The Ore Mountains region is heavily influenced by a long-standing mining tradition, the most important sights can be found along the tourist route “Silberstraße”. The highest elevation is the Fichtelberg mountain, an important centre of winter sports.
