Renata concentrates on a contrastive analysis of complexity in spoken English, with a special emphasis on some interactive discourse items/signals, such as comment clauses and question tags. All the items under investigation are studied and compared with regard to their discourse functions in a particular text and their role as response elicitors. The texts analysed are taken from the London-Lund Corpus and represent three different genres of spoken English, namely private face-to-face conversation, telephone conversation and public radio discussions. The length of the texts taken from each genre is identical. Some preliminary results of Renata‘s research will be presented at a one-day linguistic seminar in Brno in September and further discussed in Chemnitz in October 2005.
