Some Introductory Words to this Project

Our study of the language situation in East Africa is by no means complete rather we have intended to give you a short introduction to the language situation in Kenya and Tanzania and hopefully some inspirational links and thoughts for your further research.

We do not deny a certain humorous aspect of giving ourselves to the task to engage in the language situation of a country none of us has ever been to or even seen, except on maps and television. If you want to read the following pages, please, go and make yourself a nice cup of tea first - you will need it later. (If you do not want to read the following pages: We forgive you.)

The Chemnitz University research team was:

From 1991 until 1998 they set up ICE-EA, the work included travels, collecting texts and material, the setup of the special ICE-EA design and an internal markup system, computerizing every single letter of every single text sample, drawing conclusions out of their work and writing them down for various publications, re-examination of some of the conclusions and making the corpus available on CD-ROM and on the Internet.
