  • 5 years in Latin school
  • study of botany at mother's farm
  • captain in the army, served in numbers of campaigns against Native Americans, - quelling of the Whiskey Rebellion
  • 1801 private secretary and friend of President Thomas Jefferson
  • 1804-1806 captain of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • 1807 governor of Louisiana Territory with headquarters at St. Louis
  • on October 11,1809 unexpected death in an inn on the Natchez Trace while traveling to Washington in order to prepare journals for publishing. Not clear whether it was murder or suicide
