  • born on August 1,1770 in Caroline County, Virginia
  • 1792-96 army officer, serving in number of engagements with Native Americans
  • 1804-06 second captain in the Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • 1807 superintendent of Indian affairs with headquarters in St. Louis after Lewis death, Clark was urged by Jefferson to edit journals, mostly with the help of Nicholas Biddle
  • 1813-1821 governor of Missouri territory
  • 1814 led expedition against Britain and Natives during war negotiated very important treaties with the Indians with the help of Auguste Chonteau
  • 1821- 1838 superintendent of Indian affairs
  • 1838 death in St. Louis, Missouri
