Frequently Asked Questions
Last update: 30/3/2009
If you have any questions concerning your studies please e-mail them to pmstudy@mb.tu-chemnitz.de
↑ General
Whom can I address if I have questions concerning my studies?
What should I take into account when having to resign from an examination due to illness?
Please consider the notes
on resigning from an examination due to illness on the website of the Zentrales Prüfungsamt (central examination office). There you will also
find the necessary forms for resigning and for the medical certificate.
Where can I find the fonts for the lecture "Typographie und Gestaltung" (typography and design)?
↑Bachelor Media Production (B_MP, once BMEP)
I want to change my degree programme to Bachelor of Media Production.
What are the most important issues to consider?
Step 1: Recognition of study and examination achievements
If you want to get courses of your previous study programme recognised for the Media
Production programme, it is necessary to make an informal request to the chairman of
the examination board, professor Hübler. The request should state your former
university, programme of studies and precisely which results of your former programme
are to be recognised for which courses of the Bachelor's programme Media Production.
It is usually best to use a table, which shows the equivalent courses and results.
Please consult the Studienordnung (study regulations) of Media Production, which
lists all the subjects and courses of the different modules, their extent and
requirements. This information should also be considered in your request. It is
also necessary to include copies of the course certificates. Then you should make
an appointment for academic counselling.
Please bring along the original course certificates to this appointment.
There you will discuss which courses can be recognised at once. For other
courses it might be necessary to contact the responsible department to get
confirmation whether or not the courses already taken in your former studies
comply with those of the study programme Media Production. Please make sure
that you get a written confirmation including the name of the recognised
course, module number and your grade (see study regulations B. Sc. Media
Production). As soon as the request is complete and previewed it is submitted
to the examination board for a decision.
Step 2: Semester placement
Please check the information of the Studentensekretariat (registrar's office) on
change of degree programme. There you can find forms for semester placement
and change of degree programme. If you don't want to start the new programme in
the 1st semester, you first have to file the application for recognition of
study and examination achievements to the examination board. When the examination
board has decided that matter, you can file an application for change of degree
programme including the decided semester to the registrar's office.
First Internship
When do I have to complete the first internship and how long does it have to be?
The first internship for the Bachelor's programme Media Production is specified
in the study regulations as a pre-study internship. It has to last at least 6 weeks
and students can make up for it during their first three semesters. The certification you get for the
internship will be needed as admission requirement for exams in module SM 3.2 Print- und Medientechnik:
Drucktechnik (Print and Media Technology: Printing Technology).
The deadline of handing in the documents for the recognition of the internship for Media Production students
from the 4th semester is 30th Mai at each summer term. This allows for the timely certification for the
Zentrales Prüfungsamt (central examination board) and if necessary for corrections.
Will my internship be recognised?
If you are in doubt about the professional qualification of the company, please consult
the information given in the internship regulations
of the Bachelor's programme Media Production.
If you are not sure whether the company you chose is suitable and whether the internship will be recognised,
you can also contact the student counselling
office at the Institute for Print and Media Technology.
In general for the first internship you don't need the signature of the professor responsible for the field of study
How do I get the recognition for the internship?
To have your internship recognised you will need the following documents:
1. Copy of the internship contract (Annex 1 of the internship
regulations includes an example for an internship contract. However, this is only an example and can be changed and
individualised with the internship company),
2. Internship certificate (original) signed and stamped by the company: Please use the form that can be found in the
internship regulations (annex 2).
3. Internship report.
Please send these documents to the person responsible for
student counselling
at the Institute for Print and Media technology for professional acknowledgement. Then you will get an email if the report was well
done, if there are any necesarry corrections to be done, and that the documents will be forwarded to the internship commissioner of the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering, Frau Dr. Morgenstern. The recognition of your
internship will be certified and automatically sent to the Zentralen Prüfungsamt (central examination board).
How to write an internship report?
Please also consider the information provided in the
internship regulations.
The report should be well arranged and adequately written. It should include the following:
1. Introduction, presentation of the company,
2. Brief table giving an overview of the internship, including tasks, duration, and divisions one has worked for,
3. Technical reports: There are two possibilities for that. You can follow the instructions of your
internship regulations to write 1 to 2 pages for each week. Otherwise write
on chosen tasks of your internship to measure in total 5 to 10 pages and illustrate the written with pictures, drawings, etc. Please quote all used
references. The task of the internship report is to prove that you are able to comprehend and to descibe technical processes.
What about insurance coverage of the intern?
It is not easy to answer this question and it should be discussed with the company in any case.
On the one hand, the student is insured during education and training at the university by the accident
insurance of the state, in this case the state of Saxony. The insurance coverage includes not only attended
courses at the university, but also the visiting of other university facilities and participation in activities
organised by the university, such as internships, if the student carries out study-related tasks linked to the
university.
On the other hand, there exists an employment relationship between the student and the internship company,
if there is an employment contract between the intern and the internship company, which results in a so-called
personal dependency of the intern upon the company. For a personal dependency it is irrelevant if the intern is
paid for the internship or not. If an "employment relationship" exists, the intern's insurance is generally
covered by the employer's insurance company. To include insurance matters into the internship contract one
could write the following:
Fakultät Maschinenbau, Herrn Prof. Dr. Leidich; Herr Hofmann, Fachkraft
für Arbeitssicherheit, 27.06.2001)
("The compulsory insurance by the Unfallkasse Sachsen exists for students who have an accident during
activities that are causally linked to the visit of the university. This also includes activities
organised by the university, e.g. internships during the student's course of studies, if the student
carries out study-related tasks that are directly linked to the university and is not part of an
employment relationship. In any event, the university (Chemnitz University of Technology) must be
informed, so that it can report the accident to the Unfallkasse Sachsen. The Unfallkasse Sachsen
reserves its right to consider every case and decide if it is an occupational accident or not."

of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Leidich; Mr Hofmann, occupational safety

↑Second Magister major Grafische Technik (MHGT, once MGRT)
Is it possible to write my Magister's thesis in my second major Grafische Technik?
What do I have to do?
The examination regulations for Magister programmes at Chemnitz University of Technology of 13/07/2000 define in § 24,
para. 2 that the Magister's thesis should be written in the student's first major. Because of very successful research
papers in the second major Grafische Technik, students have been granted the option to write their Magister's thesis
in the second major. If you want to write your thesis in Grafische Technik you need permission by the responsible
examination boards of your first and second major. Thus, you need to write an informal letter to the two chairmen
of the examination boards stating your request. You need this permission to register your topic for the Magister's
thesis at the Zentrales Prüfungsamt (central examination office) (Antrag zur Abschlussarbeit) for the subject Grafische
Technik.
Everything else in process of Magister graduation is the same as usual.
You can find topics for
student papers (research papers or Magister's theses) on our website.
↑Bachelor study programme Media Communication (B_MK, once BMEKO)
Is the lecture "Einführung in die Medientechnik" (Introduction to Media Technology)
prerequisite for the lecture "Druckvorstufe I" (Pre-Press I)?
The lecture "Einführung in die Medientechnik" (Introduction to Media Technology) is a prerequisite for the
lecture "Druckvorstufe I" (Pre-Press I) because the courses build on each other.
In the
study regulations for the Bachelor programme Media Communication of 14.02.2007, annex 2 you can find all information
regarding exam prerequisites in the module description VIII Print and Media Technology. According to the study regulations,
however, there are no prerequisites for the examination in "Druckvorstufe I" (Pre-Press I). Thus, the lecture can be
completed with the respective exam, even if you have not yet taken the exam "Einführung in die Medientechnik" (Introduction
to Media Technology).
