Maik Müller - Bachelor Media Production - 1.04.2009-30.09.2009 - Xaar, Cambridge, UK and Järfälla, Sweden
Maik Müller Between April and September 2009, I had the opportunity to do an internship with the Advanced Application Technology group of the inkjet print head company Xaar in Cambridge, UK, as well as XaarJet AB in Järfälla, Sweden. I spent the first three months in Cambridge and worked on a project which dealt with the programming of an image analysis software. The rest of the time was dedicated to studying the completely different British culture. The second part of my internship was placed in the surroundings of Stockholm, where I could work on various interesting tasks, e.g. the inline coating of cans with several print heads, the control of an ink supply system or investigations on a new print head. During the internship I witnessed a very intensive guidance with
short daily meetings and a comfortable working environment of employees and other students. There was also a lot of space for own ideas and problem solutions. After work, the lovely city of Stockholm offers many opportunities to spent time, e.g. in a museum, in one of the many cafés, at the waterside promenade, with a walk across Södermalm or sailing and swimming respectively in one of the biggest lakes of Sweden, which was quite close to my accommodation. I quickly found some friends to share these moments. I recommend an internship to everybody who has such an opportunity.

Sonja Grenz - Magister Print and Media Technology - 12.10.2007-26.11.2007 - Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, USA
Sonja Grenz From October to November 2007, I have been working in a research project at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). The research stay was realised in the project "Charged OFET's" financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). The project deals with the improvement of the electrical conductivity of printed organic field effect transistors by electrostatic charging. Not only the interesting work in the research group of Prof. Howard E. Katz but also the trips to the surroundings of Baltimore were a real enrichment. Short city trips to Washington, Philadelphia and New York as well as the weekend trip to the Niagara Falls were special highlights. The Johns Hopkins University is a beautiful university with the typical American flair and is indeed worth a visit.

Michael Müller - Micromechanics/Mechatronics - 03.09.2007-08.02.2008 - VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Finland
I did my internship in winter 2007/2008 not far from the Arctic Circle in Oulu, at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. There I worked in the range of printed electronics and optoelectronics. My major tasks were the planning, execution and evaluation of tests regarding the production, characterization and improvement of polymer electronic layers in gravure printing. This experimental work was multifaceted, challenging, and set mainly in clean rooms. Besides, I could always produce new ideas, discuss them with friendly and open colleagues and put them into practice.
I really enjoyed the relaxed working climate, the low average age among my colleagues, flat hierarchies, creative coffee breaks and the very direct, but amiable character of the Finns. My colleagues were almost solely Finns, but they all spoke fluent English. They were eager to integrate me from the first minute and were not at all uncommunicative.
The five months in Oulu were impressive, eventful, and, thanks to snow and street lighting, surprisingly light. Oulu is located at the Gulf of Bothnia. Like Chemnitz it is not really an urbanistic jewel but it has almost the same number of inhabitants and students, including many international exchange students.
Thus, I found many different opportunities to spend my spare time and I met incredibly many people on the evenings and weekends. So, if you like sports, skiing, ice-skating, sauna parties, speeding over frozen lakes at 120km/h on a snowmobile, meeting Santa Claus in his office, or seeing polar lights you should definitely go to Oulu (in the winter).

Jens Hammerschmidt - Magister Germanistik / Grafische Technik - 16.02.-21.03.07 Manipal Press Limited, Indien
Jens Hammerschmidt From February to April, 2007 I spent four weeks abroad in the students' town Manipal, India, doing an internship at the printing company Press Limited. Primarily, I occupied myself with the programs InDesign and Photoshop CS2. Furthermore, I took the opportunity to attend an international conference on print and media technology taking place in Manipal.

I went to India without the certainty of a definite agreement for my internship. Nevertheless, I was received extraordinarily well by the department of printing and media and the Indian students. They supported me to find an accommodation, to accomplish my internship and do a number of trips.
Because of this being such a long trip I was not willing to use it just as an educational training. Therefore I visited various waterfalls and beaches together with students and some of my colleagues. I was also invited to an Indian-Muslim wedding, could join the more or less legal tradition of "chicken fights" and participated in a Hindu festival. Through these excursions I saw the real Indian life and gained an extensive and fascinating insight into the profile of the local population - from a rich doctor's family to begging street-kids.
I could have done this internship in Germany as well. However, as there were no restrictions connected to the internship from my home university, I was able to do it in my own way. And secondly, the stay in such a great country is always a valuable enrichment. Anytime again!

Ulrike Geyer - Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen Medientechnik - 16.10.2006 bis 16.02.2007 - Electronics Design Division der Mid-Sweden University in Sundsvall
Ulrike Geyer In 2006/2007 I did a four-month internship at Electronics Design Division at the Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall. My tasks included the preparation, conducting and subsequent analysis of experiments in the field of printed electronics (e.g. with a flexographic printing press).
I really enjoyed the work, as I was able to produce ideas of my own and, thus, work independently. There was a pleasant working atmosphere. I was cordially received and quickly integrated into the team. Besides the experience that I gained from the internship, I also had the chance to attend a Swedish course, which was really nice and a good possibility to get to know a lot of people. I liked Sundsvall, which is situated about 400 km north of Stockholm directly at the ocean, a lot.
I highly recommend a stay abroad. It was very interesting to live in another country for some time and to learn a lot of new things. I wouldn't want to be without the experience I gained during my internship abroad.

Tilman Liebert - Magister Pädagogik / Grafische Technik - 02.08.-10.10.2006 - Print & Publishing Education Center, Mongolia
From August 2nd to October 10th 2006 I had the chance to complete an internship in Mongolia. For a period of nine weeks I could experience the everyday life at the Print & Publishing Education Center in the middle of Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. As a part of the Mongolia State University of Science and Technique and of a funded project of the GTZ and DED there were a lot of interesting tasks to solve. Quality Management, internal education and new capital investments formed the foundation pillars of the company development. Visiting different print facilities I could get a broad picture of the Mongolian printing industry.
There is a significant different understanding of working conditions and quality management, as we know it in Germany. The used printing machine Heidelberg GTO did not naturally mean German quality standards. The more important is the role of a facility which runs qualification measurements in this region to make the smaller companies more competitive.
All in all, I can look back on a challenging internship that broadened my mind and made me acquainted with a culture so different from ours. On October 10th, as I fell satisfied into the seat of an ancient Tupolev on my way to Moscow I knew that I had done something useful for the education center and for myself.

Markus Hösel - Micromechanics/Mechatronics - 15.08.-18.11.2005 - M-real Technology Centre, Sweden
From August, 15th to November 18th I completed an additional internship in Sweden. There I worked for the M-real Technology Centre in connection with the Digital Printing Center of Mid Sweden University in Örnsköldsvik (my special thanks go to Dr. Engisch).
My task was amongst other things to plan and carry out various quality analyses of different papers on a new inkjet test station. The work was a lot of fun and the colleagues were all very likable and helpful. I was well accepted and integrated very quickly, and language problems (everything is in English) did not arise. The town of Örnsköldsvik is situated 600 km north of Stockholm directly at the Baltic Sea and has approx. 55,000 inhabitants. Life in Mid-Sweden is very enjoyable and I used my spare time to get to know the country and its people. A short trip to Stockholm perfectly completed the three-month stay.
During my time in Sweden I have gathered lots of positive experiences and contacts. I can only recommend a stay abroad to all students.
