The web site www.optpde.net hosting a collection of optimization problems with partial differential equations has gone online. This editorially managed directory will allow scientists to test their solution algorithms using a range of established problems covering various levels of difficulty. Candidates for inclusion in the collection can be manufactured problems with known solutions as well as application problems with complete specifications. Creators and editors of the OPTPDE collection are Roland Herzog (TU Chemnitz), Arnd Rösch (University of Duisburg-Essen), Stefan Ulbrich (TU Darmstadt) and Winnifried Wollner (University of Hamburg).

Roland Herzog and Ulrich Priber (Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology) successfully applied for a project on Correction algorithms and higher dimensional characteristic diagrams within the SFB/Transregio 96 (thermo-energetic design of machine tools). This SFB (collaborative research center) was approved by the DFG in May 2011 and is being led by Prof. Dr. Knut Großmann (TU Dresden). See also the documentation by the university press office.

DAAD Travel Grant
Roland Herzog and Ekkehard Sachs (University of Trier) are supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in the framework of an exchange program with the group of Andy Wathen at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). The travel grant will be used to establish a joint research project in the area of Preconditioners in PDE-Constrained Optimization and to support young researchers in particular.

The 2nd Chemnitz Seminar on Optimal Control (Skiing Seminar) will take place from March 06 through March 13, 2010 in Haus im Ennstal, Austria. It is the goal of the seminar to allow the participants to discuss freely their current research interests related to optimal control and numerical mathematics. There will also be possibilities to go or to learn skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing.
