Research at Chemnitz University of Technology is executed by more than 150 professorships in 8 departments:
In its Mission Statement Chemnitz University of Technology defines as a “characteristic brand label of Chemnitz University profile” in research “the interdisciplinary, liberal and productive dialogue” as well as the “strong commitment to the promotion of young scientists”. Focussing on future-oriented key areas like „Energy-efficient Production Processes“, „Human Factors in Technologies“ as well as „Smart Systems and Materials“ Chemnitz University of Technology wants to contribute to the solution of the urgent societal problems and questions of tomorrow in the regional, national and international context.
An important indicator for measuring the intensity and strength of research at a university in Germany is the ability to gain so called “third-party funding” which means the ability to acquire financial resources by cooperation with strong industrial partners or by the support of promising research projects by funding organisations in addition to those dedicated by the State. Concerning third-party funding Chemnitz University of Technology was able to reach high growth rates within the last years so that meanwhile one third of the whole budget of the university consists on that type of resources.
A further indicator for profiled an internationally competitive top-level research are research cluster where Chemnitz University of Technology is playing the leading role and which were successful in the competitive award of funding. Outstanding examples for this ability are the Cluster of Excellence “Energy-efficient Product and Process Innovations in Production Engineering« (eniPROD)”, the “Nano system integration network of excellence“ as well as numerous collaborative research centers and transdisciplinary competence centers.
Thanks to its successful application for establishing the research cluster “Merge Technologies for Multifunctional Lightweight Structures (MERGE)” within the actual national excellence initiative for competitive award of additional funding until 2017 Chemnitz University of Technology has already made the next step towards the assurance of top-level research also in the future.
In addition to that Chemnitz University of Technology is also networking closely with extramural research institutions (i.a. Fraunhofer IWU Chemnitz, Fraunhofer ENAS Chemnitz, Leibniz IFW Branch Chemnitz) as well as with enterprises and, thanks to the “Smart Systems Campus”, it disposes also of an incubator for the direct transfer of research results into marketable products and for the foundation of spin-off-companies.
Furthermore Chemnitz University of Technology is dedicated to the special support of young researchers. Numerous young researcher groups and graduate schools, underneath them the International Research Training Group “Materials and Concepts for Advanced Interconnects and Nanosystems”, are assisting in reaching this goal.
In addition to their specialist qualification young researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology have also the opportunity to further improve their employability by acquiring key competencies and additional qualification at a Research Academy. Especially for the support of international scientists are made the further training offers of the “Welcome Centre”.
