Master Programme Informatics

The master programme Informatics constitutes the logical continuation of the bachelor programmes Informatics and Applied Informatics. The master programme is research-oriented and leads to state-of-the-art specialised knowledge in various fields of Informatics such as Computer Graphics, Parallel Programming, Simultaneous Computers, Operating Systems and Computer Networks.

In times of increasing digitalisation, networking and/or virtual models, Informatics has become a key discipline which influences broad parts of the (working) life. Well-trained computer scientists will find their workplace at various institutions: Banks, software companies in the broadest sense, telecommunication enterprises in general or service companies.

The master programme Informatics is modularly built allowing students to choose subject matters according to their own desires and the requirements of professional work. All this is secured by a great degree of freedom in choosing the modules.

Entry Requirements: Bachelor Informatics or Applied Informatics at Chemnitz University of Technology;
The board of examiners decides on entry requirements for applicants from other universities.
Standard Duration: 4 terms
Award: Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Start Date: Summer and winter term

Career Opportunities

The successful completion of the master programme Informatics allows the smooth transition into a doctoral programme as well as working in challenging jobs in e.g. the industrial sector, the public service and/or research. The occupational area for the degree holder is particularly broad and reaches from banks, insurance companies, consulting firms through to small and large-scale software houses and development departments in big concerns or even the academic career and service companies in general.

The core competencies mentioned below are primary requirements for future employment. The extensive skills conveyed in a particular application field sometimes come at the expense of general skills and thus lead directly to occupational areas that are more specialised.

Struktura studia

The three terms before writing the master’s thesis (to be written in the fourth term) consist of studying the classical subareas of Informatics:

  • Applied informatics
  • Computer engineering
  • Practical informatics
  • Theoretical informatics

Besides lectures and seminars, comprehensive project placements are part of this programme. The additional practical subject can be chosen from a variety of approximately ten subjects. The purpose of this practical subject is to broaden the horizon and, furthermore, it helps communicating across the field of informatics.

The modules can be chosen freely to a large extent, with the restriction to choose modules from every classical subarea which are compulsory. Modules from the elective subject of the bachelor programme Informatics can also be chosen, unless they have already been taken previously by the student. On the basis of these regulations the sufficient academic width and the required possibility to specialise according to one’s interests, as it is the nature of this research oriented master programme, can be guaranteed.

Offered core competencies of the master programme Informatics are:

  • Profound knowledge in the areas Computer Engineering, Parallel Processing, Computer Architecture, Network Structures, Theoretical Informatics, Low-level and High-level Software, Graphics and Artificial Intelligence
  • Knowledge in one practical subject (minor), in order to broaden the students’ horizons scientifically and to develop a general awareness for problems of application areas outside Informatics
  • Logical reasoning, arguing, representing complex facts
  • Creativity in using new concepts, overview on existing approaches to a problem, knowledge of existing limits of Informatics in principle, the problem of (non-)efficiency
  • Development of new solutions and their algorithmic implementation, patience and strength to implement (innovative) solutions, assessment of the implementation of them

In order to satisfy the respective personal aims of students and their occupational ambitions the degree programme consists of a wide range of options:

  • Approximately one tenth of the entire programme will be dedicated to the selected practical subject (minor).
  • Within the core area of Informatics it is possible to freely chose modules according to a set of regulations which ensures the necessary width and depth of the studies.
  • The topic of the master’s thesis can be chosen from the pick list of the department (even in collaboration with the industry). Preparatory modules for the master’s thesis are an integral part of the study.
  • The teaching of key competencies such as interdisciplinarity, communication skills and general interpersonal skills is ensured by the minor module as well as seminar and (project) work placement modules.
