Studying the degree programme Computer Science (Dipl.-Inf.) offered by Chemnitz University of Technology represents a well-balanced compromise between learning about genuine theoretical basics of informatics and practical skills in handling and applying tools of informatics. This is achieved by means of a broad foundation course programme, one area of specialisation which can freely be chosen, one additional minor subject as well as a comprehensive offer of practical work.

This combination of theoretical as well as practical skills and knowledge enables the holder of the diploma to participate in research, development and application of informatics tools, to contribute to the further enhancement of informatics as a scientific discipline and to design and implement computer-aided information and control systems. A degree holder in Informatics (Dipl.-Inf.) will be able to design and develop such systems, to evaluate them, to plan their applications and to manage, start up and maintain their installations. All this is based on the understanding of precise descriptions by means of formal languages and the comprehension of processes and efficiency of technical and societal information systems. Furthermore, the degree holders will learn about methods and tools and possess skills and knowledge in the field of system analysis and integration and development and maintenance of complex informatics systems.

For the dialogue with users and as their partner when looking for solutions for their problems by help of informatics the graduated information scientist will have to be open-minded for communication and able to appropriately formulate job definitions so that they can be solved by means of informatics. Degree holders will have the ability to cooperate on an interdisciplinary level and the required societal sense of responsibility.

Struktura studia

Basic Studies

The basic studies comprise the first four terms. Students will be taught the principles of practical and theoretical informatics as well as computer engineering, mathematics and the chosen minors. To provide the same know-how to all students the basic studies are organised more rigidly, i.e. a timetable prescribes compulsory courses.

The lectures of Informatics in the basic studies form the core units of the education. They convey basic knowledge on programming skills, the structure and operation methods of digital computers as well as theoretical foundations of Informatics. They are complemented by practical exercises, work placements and seminars. Seminars are interactive courses, each participant presents one topic of the subject.

  • Minor Subject

In their basic studies students choose a minor subject for their entire duration of study in order to acquire substantiated skills beyond the specific field of Informatics. This enables students to solve problems in informatics within a particular application area and to communicate with colleagues of this special field.

Currently, the minor subject can be chosen from the following list:

  • English in everyday and technical communication
  • Construction design
  • Mathematics
  • Operations research
  • Print and media technology
  • Production engineering
  • Psychology
  • Environmental engineering

The range of minor subjects is continuously being extended. Upon application it is also possible to combine additional subjects offered at Chemnitz University of Technology as minors for the study of Informatics.

The basic studies are completed with an intermediate exam (Diplom-Vorprüfung). The intermediate exam comprises the following qualifying examinations:

  • Mathematics
  • Theoretical informatics
  • Practical informatics
  • Computer engineering
  • Minor subject

As prerequisites for admission to the qualifying examinations it is necessary to acquire credit points. Additionally, the participation in one proseminar (a seminar in the basic studies) has to be accomplished.

 

Main Studies

The main studies comprise five terms. Based on the basic studies the acquired knowledge, skills and practical capabilities are extended in one subject area of Informatics to be chosen by the student (specialisation).

The courses in the main studies are composed of core units, which are compulsory for all students independent of their specialisation, plus the courses in the chosen specialisation. The core units are to be attended in the 5th and 6th term and the specialisation in the 6th to 8th term.

Core units are compulsory courses in the core fields of Informatics, in which the knowledge of the basic studies are extended. The acquired knowledge, skills and capabilities shall form the basis for the independent study of other subject areas of informatics. They comprise the following units:

    Operating systems Computer graphics Databases Artificial intelligence Computer architecture Computer networks Theoretical informatics III Theory of programming languages

In the selected specialisation students are provided with skills and capabilities in a specific subject area of informatics including results of the latest research. In this subject area students will develop and finally prove their qualification for scientific working by means of own projects produced in work placements, one advanced seminar, in the student research project and the diploma thesis. Students can choose their units for specialisation from a list of predetermined units. Thus, it is possible to freely choose the respective subjects according to students' respective desires.

The diploma examination consists of two qualifying examinations in the field of core units from the 5th and 6th term, one examination in the field of the specialisation, one examination in the minor subject, and the diploma thesis. The diploma thesis will be written during a duration of 6 months in the 9th term.

As prerequisites for admission to the qualifying examinations in the specialisation it is necessary to acquire a certain amount of credit points from one advanced seminar, from one informatics work placement, from a student research project and from two additional units.
