The bachelor programme Informatics offered at Chemnitz University of Technology represents a well-balanced compromise between learning about theoretical basics of informatics and practical skills in handling tools of informatics. This is achieved by conveying solid fundamentals. Internal work placements and external practical activities – possible in the course of writing the bachelor thesis – will already familiarise the student with problems they might be confronted with in practice.
This combination of theoretical and practical skills and knowledge enables the holder of the degree to participate in research, development and application of informatics tools, to contribute to the further enhancement of informatics as a scientific discipline, and to design and implement computer-aided information and control systems. A degree holder of the bachelor programme Informatics will be able to design and develop such systems, to evaluate them, to plan their applications and to manage, start up and maintain their installations. All this is based on an understanding of precise description modes by means of formal languages and a comprehension of processes and the efficiency of technical and societal information systems.
Beyond that, bachelor students of Informatics will learn about methods and tools and possess skills and competences in the field of system analysis and integration as well as for developing and maintaining complex informatics systems.
Concerning the dialogue with users, and as their partner when looking for solutions to be solved with the help of informatics the holders of a bachelor degree in Informatics are expected to be open-minded about the appropriate way of communication. In addition to that, they are supposed to formulate job definitions appropriately in order to be solved by means of informatics. They are supposed to being able to cooperate on an interdisciplinary level as well as having the required societal sense of responsibility. This is to be achieved by studying a minor subject as part of the Bachelor programme.

A bachelor degree allows carrying out challenging activities in many fields such as:
The competencies to be acquired during the bachelor programme Informatics aim at the above mentioned occupational areas and perspectives. In particular, students are introduced to analytical thinking and taught to act responsibly. Students will develop important skills such as ingenuity, exact and systematic work techniques, the ability to abstract, capacity for teamwork, social aptitudes or communication and cooperation skills, they will be familiarised with algorithmic implementations of abstract processes, and learn to work self-sufficiently.Particular importance is attached to being able to adapt to the changing conditions in the field of data processing and, most importantly, to participate actively in this change.
ausgerichtet: The bachelor programme Informatics is modularly structured. Modules are course units within one subject area, which upon successful completion are awarded with credit points. Altogether, 180 credit points are to be collected. They can be acquired by attending approximately 23 modules throughout the entire programme.
The degree programme comprises three phases. Each phase emphasises one central topic:
Phase I – Foundation of Informatics:
This phase focuses on basic methods of informatics. The foundations of computer engineering and practical informatics are taught in connection with mathematical and informatical basics.
The following base modules are to be completed:
Phase II – The Scope of Informatics:
This phase conveys further aspects in the field of theoretical and practical informatics. Advanced principles in mathematics are taught as supplementary information and complete the introduction of foundations. Having completed this phase, students possess all skills required for a qualifying specialisation.
The following specialisation modules are to be completed:
Phase III – Specialisation and degree:
This phase comprises two parts. At first, the specialisation modules are to be completed. These modules are structured in a way that they give students certain options (elective modules) to choose from with regard to concrete courses, i.e. students can choose a module from a provided set of course units. The skills acquired will then be applied in the final bachelor thesis.
Specialisation modules - 6 modules are to be chosen from the following list:
Parallel to the study of Informatics, during all 6 terms, interdisciplinary basics are taught by way of a minor subject and special course units:
The supplementary module teaches methodologies of scientific working methods (representation techniques, research). These skills are intensified in a seminar on scientific representation competencies.
By choosing one of the following By choosing one of the following students can strengthen their soft skills and social competencies:
The programme is completed with theBachelor Thesis and its defence.
After the programme has successfully been completed the degree holder is entitled to apply for a consecutive master programme.
