Bachelor Programme Applied Informatics

The bachelor programme Applied Informatics is a fundamental scientifically oriented tertiary education programme in the field of Informatics and awards students an undergraduate degree which entitles for a professional career. Here students can specialise in one of the practical subjects Embedded Systems, Media Informatics, Information and Communication Systems or Graphical Data Processing and Visualisation.

The bachelor programme qualifies students for mid-level activities. This degree programme can be complemented by consecutive master programmes qualifying for academic careers. The degree of a master programme can be viewed as equivalent to the previous Diploma programmes and forms a solid basis for a subsequent upper-middle or even strategic position in the working life as well as for a continuing academic career.

The bachelor programme Applied Informatics comprises three fundamental areas: The teaching of fundamental principles, the intensification of the principles acquired including the acquisition of basic skills in the practical subject chosen, and the intensifying period of study in the practical subject selected. The first area offers consecutive base modules where students acquire basic knowledge in the field of Practical Informatics, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Theoretical Informatics. The two other programme phases offer options for consecutive modules of the practical subjects chosen, i.e. students can freely chose from a prescribed set of modules. Additionally, complementary modules from the School of Humanities and Science, the Department of Economics and the International Language Centre are offered.

Thus, the bachelor programme represents a well-balanced compromise between the conveyance of theoretical basics of informatics and skills in handling tools of informatics – supplemented by an intensified education in a chosen practical subject.

This combination of theoretical and practical skills entitles degree holders to study consecutive master programmes and allows them to gain first practical experiences. In the course of their studies they will learn to actively design and implement computer-based information and control systems. They acquire skills in the field of system analysis and systems integration as well as know-how to develop and maintain complex informatics systems. Beyond that, in dialogue with users and as their partner when solving a problem the degree holders will be able to formulate job definitions appropriately in order to be solved by means of informatics. Furthermore, capabilities concerning interdisciplinary cooperation will be trained extensively.

Entry Requirements: General qualification for university entrance
Standard Duration: 6 terms
Award: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
Start Date: Winter term

Career Opportunities

The successful completion of the programme entitles students to continue education in relevant master programmes and to execute challenging activities in all areas of one of the many broad business segments of our current information society.

The following list provides some examples of prospective occupational fields:

  • Telecommunications
  • Media sector:
  • Transportation and automotive industry
  • Mechanical engineering and electrical industry
  • Environmental engineering and energy management
  • Services of all kinds: Trade, banks, insurance companies, consulting
  • Public service

Particular importance is attached to being able to adapt to the changing conditions of our information society. Precondition for this is a continuing education throughout the entire working life.

Struktura studia

The programme runs over a period of six terms including the final thesis and one work placement. In addition to skills in Informatics and Mathematics, knowledge in one of the specified practical subjects of Informatics is acquired throughout the entire study period. Supplementary modules from the School of Humanities and Science, the Department of Economics and the International Language Centre open up the possibility to acquire solid skills even beyond the area of Informatics.

The subject matter is taught in the form of lectures, tutorials, seminars and work placements, and is complemented by excursions. The skills acquired will be assessed by means of credit points and examinations. Credit points and examinations are to be acquired in the form of written tests, oral examinations, work placements, presentations, seminar papers or research projects and the final bachelor thesis including its defence.

Modules of the basic studies teach principles of practical and theoretical informatics, mathematics as well as computer engineering.

The Informatics modules in the basic studies form the core of the programme. They teach students basic skills in the field of programming techniques and the design and operating methods of computers and teach theoretical foundations of Informatics.

The basic studies are followed by an intensification of the acquired knowledge and skills by means of further key courses of Informatics and one practical subject of Informatics which can be chosen freely by students. According to their interests and preferences students can choose their courses from the following areas:

  • Embedded systems,
  • Media informatics,
  • Information and communication systems,
  • Computer graphics / virtual reality.

The programme is completed with the bachelor thesis and its defence.
