Parallel architectures

Designing high-performance parallel computers has been a grand challenge for decades. Besides the technical problems emerging while realizing those kind of systems, numerous issues concerning parallel high-performance computer architectures must still be discussed in research. Examples for current research topics are programming interfaces and programming paradigms needed to design efficient algorithms. Furthermore, the distribution of the parallel application execution to hardware ressources as well as runtime control and runtime support have become a subject of frequent discussion. Especially, efficient realizations of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard and extension proposals to this standard are necessary to implement applications for current hardware architectures.
