Object-oriented parallel FEM-systems

This project is part of the Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 393 "Numerische Simulation auf massiv parallelen Rechnern" funded by the DFG. (B2).
The proposal accepted in principle is available as postscript.

goal:

Implementation of an object-oriented parallel FEM-system

modularization of the system (mainly with respect to structural dependencies)
development of suitable interfaces for the components
independence from the hardware by separating system dependent components
improvement of flexibility and maintanability

starting point:

existing parallel implementations from the department of mathematics of the University of Technology Chemnitz

what was done up to now:

analysis of one fem-system (SPC-PMPo2)
examination of other object-oriented approaches [1,2] with respect to their suitability for our work
concept for the implementation of utility-classes (matrices, vectors, ...) and the core solver (preconditoned CG)
examination of various programming models as base for the implementation [3]

next steps:

implementation and evaluation of the object-oriented realization of the CG-algorithm
concept for the implementation of further components (net genarator, assembling, ...)
For cooperation and assistance we are looking for interested students (under) graduates and (post) doctorals
- Assistant student for supporting the implementation of utility-classes (matrices, vectors, ...) within the project.
- Research student (doctoral student) for investigating "Approaches for the development of object-oriented adaptive Finite-Element-Method (FEM) simulations".
- Assistant research worker for planning and carrying out the object-oriented implementation of selected components (net generator, assembler, ...) of our parallel Finite-Element-Method (FEM) simulation system.
