The nationwide unique profile of the Institute for Print and Media Technology is reflected in its four areas of research: Printing Technologies, Digital Printing, Printed Electronics and Colour & Documents. The research group Printing Technologies deals with the further development of inking units' technology, with questions regarding the processing of different papers, with adhesion and varnish problems as well as with other aspects of printing technologies such as dimensional stability and web travel of reel paper. The group Digital Printing has made the expansion of the advantages of digital printing (from small runs up to personalised printed matters) as well as the further development of the technology their business. They work on the development of new technologies and printing heads as well as on the study and enhancements of known materials and their composition. The Printed Electronics group is concerned with the structuring of electronic components consisting of electrically active polymers which are available as liquids. They investigate amongst others the improvement of printing technologies, the increase of performance data and application possibilities. The research group Colour & Documents focuses on data processing aspects of print media technology such as the acquisition and processing of colour information, the management of documents, the application of new, modern information technologies for knowledge transfer, the computer-based integration of all processes of the graphical industries or the automated digitalisation and preparation of complex documents for the modern information cycle.
Media technology is not yet a separate course of study in Chemnitz, but it is integrated as a specialisation in various established programmes. This mirrors the conviction that media technology is not a separate science, although it is profoundly interdisciplinary. Thus the students receive a knowledgeable and broad basic education, which serves as a foundation for each specialisation in media technology.
We currently offer the following degree programmes:
These degree programmes will be transferred into Bachelor/Master programmes within the next few years. Starting in October 2006 we offer a Bachelor programme in Media Production finishing with a Bachelor of Science.
